James Urwin earns a base salary of £100k-180k ($133k-239k) in F1 Salaries’ 2026 band for race engineers. It’s the band for engineers who run one driver’s car, and Urwin has done that job at Williams since 2017.
Once a bonus of £10k-54k ($13k-72k) is added, his annual total comes to £110k-234k ($146k-310k). Albon’s base salary is $12m. Marcus Dudley, who now engineers Urwin’s former driver George Russell at Mercedes, sits in the same band. Williams hasn’t published any of Urwin’s contract terms.

What Each Point Now Costs Red Bull
Urwin is Alex Albon‘s race engineer and the voice on car 23’s radio. He shapes Albon’s setup, runs the plan for each session and translates Albon’s feel for the car into changes the engineers can make.
They’ve worked together since Albon joined Williams in 2022, so 2026 is their fifth season as a pair. Chief trackside engineer Paul Williams leads the wider trackside group, and Gaëtan Jego engineers Sainz. His route into F1 ran through the garage, since he was a touring car mechanic and a GP2 engineer before Williams hired him.

Andrew Vizard, who engineers Fernando Alonso at Aston Martin, is on the same £100k-180k ($133k-239k) band as Urwin, like most F1 race engineers. Adding a department changes the number. Peter Bonnington leads race engineering at Mercedes as well as engineering Kimi Antonelli, and his band is £250k-600k ($331k-795k).
Urwin worked as a mechanic and junior-series engineer before joining Williams in 2014, and he’s since been the regular race engineer for three drivers.
Urwin and Gaëtan Jego share the race engineer band at Williams, £100k-180k ($133k-239k), the lowest of the team’s staff figures. The drivers are paid on another scale entirely, with Albon on $12m. Higher up the staff list, chief technical officer Pat Fry is on £500k-2m ($663k-2.7m).
James Urwin works with Alex Albon, not Carlos Sainz. He’s been on Albon’s car since Albon joined Williams in 2022. Sainz’s race engineer is Gaëtan Jego, who runs the other side of the garage, and some older pages still mix the two up.
Since 2014, which makes 2026 James Urwin’s 13th season at Williams. He spent three years as a performance engineer before engineering Lance Stroll from 2017. He also ran one-off races for Jack Aitken at Sakhir in 2020 and Nyck de Vries at Monza in 2022.
James Urwin probably won’t, if a July 2026 GPblog report is right. It says he’ll move to another job inside Williams for 2027, and Albon would get a new race engineer. The team hasn’t confirmed the change, named Urwin’s next role or said who will take over on car 23.
As a Williams race engineer, James Urwin is on a base salary of £100k-180k ($133k-239k) by F1 Salaries’ figures. A bonus of £10k-54k ($13k-72k) would take his year to £110k-234k ($146k-310k). Williams keeps engineers’ pay private, so no contract figure exists in public.
James Urwin is a British race engineer at Williams and the engineer Alex Albon talks to on the radio. He’s spent his entire F1 career at the team since 2014. Lance Stroll and George Russell were his drivers before Albon, and Russell took second place at Spa with him in 2021.
