Who Is Leading the 2026 F1 Championship?

Kimi Antonelli has won eight of the 16 Grands Prix so far and leads on 320 points, 84 more than George Russell. At $3.4m he's also the best value on the grid, and each of his points has cost Mercedes about $11k. Lewis Hamilton is third on 214 points, and Charles Leclerc is fourth on 191.
Lando Norris and Max Verstappen are level on 188 points, with Norris ahead because he has two wins to Verstappen's one. Verstappen is still the highest paid driver at $70m, so Red Bull has paid around $372k for every point he's scored, a figure we track in how much F1 drivers are paid per point. Mercedes leads the constructors' standings by 151 points from Ferrari, and Cadillac is the only team yet to score.

How the F1 Points System Works

Formula 1 gives points to the top 10 finishers in every Grand Prix. The winner gets 25, and the scale drops to 18, 15, 12, 10, 8, 6, 4, 2 and 1 for 10th place. Sprints pay the top eight, from eight points for the winner down to one for eighth, so 33 is the most a driver can take from a sprint weekend.
F1 dropped the bonus point for the fastest lap from 2025, six years after bringing it back, so a Grand Prix is worth 25 points at most. Both drivers' points count toward the constructors' championship, which makes a one-two worth 43 points to a team, or 58 when a sprint one-two is added. Points also feed the bonuses in many driver contracts, as we explain in how performance bonuses work in F1.
A race that's cut short pays reduced points, and nothing at all is given if fewer than two laps are completed under green flags. The full scale only applies once 75% of the distance has been run. When drivers finish the season level on points, the higher place goes to whoever has more wins, then more second places, and so on down the results.

F1 Standings and Points: FAQs

Kimi Antonelli leads the 2026 drivers' standings with 320 points after 16 rounds. The Mercedes driver has won eight Grands Prix and is 84 points clear of his teammate George Russell. Lewis Hamilton is third for Ferrari on 214 points, ahead of Charles Leclerc on 191.

A Grand Prix win is worth 25 points, and second place earns 18. Winning the sprint adds another eight on the six weekends that have one, so the most a driver can score in a weekend is 33. F1 scrapped the extra point for the fastest lap from 2025, which leaves 25 as the maximum for the race itself.

The top 10 in a Grand Prix score 25, 18, 15, 12, 10, 8, 6, 4, 2 and 1 points. In a sprint the top eight score, starting with eight points for the winner and dropping by one for each place down to a single point for eighth. Everyone further back leaves without points, however close they finish.

When drivers finish level, the FIA separates them by countback, so the driver with more wins goes ahead. If wins are equal it compares second places, then thirds and so on. That's why Lando Norris is fifth in 2026 and Max Verstappen is sixth, since both have 188 points and Norris has two wins to one.

Yes, sprint points count toward both the drivers' and constructors' championships. The top eight in each sprint score from eight points down to one, and there are six sprints in 2026. Our table gives each sprint its own column before that weekend's Grand Prix, so Kimi Antonelli's China weekend shows 4 sprint points and 25 from the race.

Seven Grands Prix are left after the Bahrain Grand Prix in Malaysia, starting in Singapore on October 11 and finishing in Abu Dhabi on December 6. Singapore also hosts the last sprint of the year, so a driver can still score 183 points, which is more than Antonelli's 84-point lead over George Russell.
