A head of race strategy in F1 makes a base salary of £180k-350k ($239k-464k) on our figures, the band we use for department heads. Bonuses of 10% to 30% would take that to £198k-455k ($262k-603k).
Hannah Schmitz, Ravin Jain and Carine Cridelich all sit in that band. The only published figure is an old one, a $154k salary reported for Schmitz in 2022. Andy Cowell earns more because his strategy job is an executive role.

Ravin Jain has led race strategy at Ferrari since February 2023, after working his way up inside the team’s strategy group. On race weekends he weighs pit windows, undercuts and safety car responses for both cars.
His base salary is £180k-350k ($239k-464k) on our figures, the same band as his opposite numbers at Red Bull and Haas.

Andy Cowell tops the bars on £500k-2m ($663k-2.7m), but he isn’t a race strategist. He coordinates Aston Martin’s technical partners, including Honda and Aramco, as chief strategy officer.
The three heads of race strategy share the next band, so Schmitz, Jain, and Cridelich are level on our figures.
Cowell has the highest reported net worth in this group at £12m ($15.9m), from a career that included running Mercedes’ engine company and, in 2025, Aston Martin itself. Schmitz is the only race strategist with a published figure, a reported $3m.
Jain and Cridelich have no credible figure. Like most F1 engineers, they’re salaried staff without shares in their teams, so their wealth comes from pay, and a head of strategy’s band tops out at £350k ($464k) before bonuses.
Reports Hannah Schmitz's net worth at $3m, the only published figure for a race strategist.
Career background for Andy Cowell, including his time at Mercedes.

A race strategist decides when to pit and which tires to fit. Before a Grand Prix the strategy team models tire wear, pit-stop time loss and likely race positions, and during it they read the live data and recommend the calls, usually through the race engineer.
Most have degrees in engineering, math or physics and start as strategy engineers or analysts. The best-known, like Schmitz, spent more than a decade in the job before running a whole department.

You become an F1 strategist through a strong degree in engineering, math or physics and a graduate or junior role in a team’s strategy group. Hannah Schmitz joined Red Bull in 2009 after studying engineering at Cambridge. Most strategists spend years as analysts or strategy engineers before running race calls.
Hannah Schmitz leads Max Verstappen’s race strategy as Red Bull’s head of race strategy, covering both cars. Her department models pace, tire wear and pit-stop losses before each Grand Prix, and she shapes the live calls during it. Gianpiero Lambiase, his race engineer, passes those calls to Verstappen on the radio.
