On our figures, Gianpiero Lambiase’s base salary at Red Bull is £350k-800k ($464k-1.1m). That’s well above a normal race engineer’s band, because on top of Max Verstappen’s car he runs the team’s racing operation as Head of Racing.
With a bonus of £35k-240k ($46k-318k), his year would come to £385k-1.04m ($510k-1.4m). Coverage of his McLaren move described a multi-million-pound deal. Nobody has put an annual figure on that contract, or on the Red Bull one reported to run through 2027.

What Each Point Now Costs Red Bull
Lambiase does two jobs at Red Bull. On race weekends he’s the voice on Max Verstappen‘s radio, as he has been since May 2016. As Head of Racing since 2025 he also covers race operations, the heritage department and car build, which pulls him into regulatory and organizational work far beyond one car.
His next move is already set. McLaren announced in April 2026 that he’ll join as Chief Racing Officer no later than 2028, taking a title Andrea Stella currently holds alongside team principal.

RacingNews365's report of Lambiase's move to McLaren as Chief Racing Officer, announced in April 2026.
Formula 1's report on the McLaren move, with a start no later than 2028.

Lambiase has the highest band of anyone on our F1 race engineers list. Peter Bonnington, who’s Mercedes’ head of race engineering as well as Kimi Antonelli’s engineer, is on £250k-600k ($331k-795k). McLaren’s Will Joseph, race engineering director and Lando Norris’ engineer, is on £200k-450k ($265k-596k).
Lambiase spent a decade at the Silverstone team as it changed from Jordan to Force India, then joined Red Bull in 2015 and was paired with Verstappen a year later.
Lambiase’s band is the third highest at the Red Bull F1 team, behind Laurent Mekies and Pierre Waché. On the other side of the garage, Richard Wood engineers Isack Hadjar on £100k-180k ($133k-239k). That’s the standard race engineer band, less than half of Lambiase’s at either end, because Wood doesn’t carry a Head of Racing title.
Gianpiero Lambiase’s base salary at Red Bull is £350k-800k ($464k-1.1m) on F1 Salaries’ figures, and a bonus could take his year to £1.04m ($1.4m). The band is higher than a race engineer’s because he’s Head of Racing too. The £120k ($159k) figure on some profile pages has no source behind it.
Gianpiero Lambiase’s university and degree aren’t named in the Red Bull, McLaren, or Formula 1 material behind this page, so it doesn’t state them. His documented career starts at Jordan in 2005. From there he worked as a performance engineer and then a race engineer at Force India before Red Bull hired him in 2015.
McLaren says Gianpiero Lambiase will join no later than 2028 and hasn’t given an exact date. His Red Bull contract is reported to run through 2027, so any earlier start would need Red Bull to release him. No early release has been agreed in public, and he’s still Verstappen’s engineer and Red Bull’s Head of Racing.
No, McLaren has hired Gianpiero Lambiase as its Chief Racing Officer, not as team principal. Andrea Stella holds both titles at the moment, and McLaren hasn’t promised Lambiase the top job. Stella signed a multi-year renewal in 2024, and the Chief Racing Officer role covers part of his current title.
There’s no credible net worth figure for Gianpiero Lambiase. Numbers that circulate online don’t show any assets or debts, and his pay has never been disclosed, so this page leaves the figure blank instead of guessing. His current Red Bull salary band is £350k-800k ($464k-1.1m) a year.
Since May 2016, when Verstappen moved up from Toro Rosso and won the Spanish Grand Prix on his Red Bull debut, GP Lambiase has been his race engineer. Verstappen won four drivers’ titles with him from 2021 to 2024, and 2026 is their 11th season as a pairing.
