Neil Houldey’s base salary is £500k-2m ($663k-2.7m) on F1 Salaries’ role-based figures for a technical director. McLaren doesn’t publish his pay, and no outlet has reported it.
A bonus worth £50k-600k ($66k-795k) would lift his year to £550k-2.6m ($729k-3.4m). He reached technical director level in 2024 after 18 years at McLaren, most of them in the design office, so he was promoted from within rather than bought from a rival. He shares the band with Rob Marshall, although the two men do quite different jobs.

What Each Point Now Costs Red Bull
Houldey’s 2026 title covers the engineering that keeps a finished car running and improving. Reliability, research and technology, and technical matters at the track all come under him, so his side of the department answers for whether the car lasts a race distance and performs on the day.
Design itself belongs to Rob Marshall and aero to Peter Prodromou, and all three directors work under Andrea Stella. Houldey also brings a long view of where McLaren’s cars are heading, having once chaired the concept group as deputy head of design.
McLaren's biography covering his Applied Engineering remit, Loughborough degree, Lola years and promotions at Woking.

Houldey is on the same £500k-2m ($663k-2.7m) band as the grid’s other technical directors. Williams’ Matt Harman holds the Technical Director Engineering title Houldey had from 2024, and Haas’s Andrea De Zordo sits alongside them. The full comparison is on our F1 technical staff page.
Houldey arrived at McLaren from Lola in 2006 and climbed through its design office before joining the technical leadership in 2023.
Houldey is one of three technical chiefs at McLaren on the £500k-2m ($663k-2.7m) band, with Rob Marshall and Peter Prodromou. Of the three, he’s the only one who has never worked for another Formula 1 team.
Applied Engineering is Neil Houldey’s part of McLaren’s technical department. It covers reliability, research and technology, and the technical side of race weekends. It’s the engineering that gets a designed car to the finish and keeps finding performance, while design and aero have their own directors.
Neil Houldey looks after reliability, research and trackside technical work, while Rob Marshall leads the car’s design as Chief Technical Officer and Chief Designer. Marshall’s group decides how the car is built, and Houldey’s makes sure it holds together and works at the circuit. Both are part of Andrea Stella’s technical leadership.
Neil Houldey is McLaren’s Technical Director for Applied Engineering and a Loughborough automotive engineering graduate. He designed at Lola before joining McLaren in 2006, then spent years in the design office and rose to deputy head of design. He became deputy technical director in 2023 and a technical director in 2024.
F1 Salaries puts Neil Houldey’s base at £500k-2m ($663k-2.7m), its band for a technical director. With a bonus of £50k-600k ($66k-795k), his year would come to £550k-2.6m ($729k-3.4m). McLaren keeps technical staff pay private, and his contract length isn’t public.
Neil Houldey joined McLaren in 2006 as a design engineer. Before that he’d graduated from Loughborough in 2000 and worked at Lola as a designer and project leader. By 2008 he was leading McLaren’s front suspension and driver controls team, and he’s stayed at the team ever since.
