Oscar Piastri’s base salary is $13m in 2026, a $3m or 30% rise on last season. It’s gone up every year since his debut and is now more than four times the $3m McLaren paid him as a rookie in 2023.
Even so, Fernando Alonso and Pierre Gasly both have bigger base salaries, and Piastri earns less than half of Lando Norris’s $30m in the same garage. Across 23 Grands Prix his base comes to about $565k a race.
Puts his 2025 bonuses at $27.5m, which sets the bonus scenario for 2026.

The Bonus That Could Triple Piastri's Pay
Bonuses are where Piastri’s biggest money comes from. He earned around $27.5m of them in 2025, and a similar season would lift his potential income to $40.5m, roughly three times his base salary and the sixth-highest figure on the grid. His 2026 season stats put him seventh in the standings on 144 points, and he is still looking for his first win of 2026.

The McLaren Contract Covering Piastri's 2026 Season
Piastri is racing 2026 on the contract McLaren announced on September 20, 2023, late in his rookie season. It covers three years from 2024 to the end of 2026, and his base rose from $5m to $10m and then $13m along the way, $28m in total.
Bonuses have mattered more than the salary, with $17m added in 2024 and $27.5m in 2025. Before that deal was even halfway through, McLaren had announced a multi-year extension in March 2025 that keeps him at the team beyond this season.
Piastri's Extension to the End of 2028
McLaren confirmed a multi-year extension on March 11, 2025. Reports say it runs to the end of 2028, which adds 2027 and 2028 to his current deal and would be worth around $26m in base salary if his $13m carries over.
The new terms may also have lifted his pay before 2027, since his base rose in 2025 and again this year.
Piastri reached F1 after a year as Alpine’s reserve driver, and his McLaren pay has grown from $8m in 2023 to $37.5m in 2025. The stints below show how each step came about. Those earnings sit behind his estimated $50m net worth.

The reigning F2 champion spent 2022 as Alpine’s reserve without a race seat. When Alpine announced him for 2023, he said he hadn’t signed, and the Contract Recognition Board ruled that his McLaren contract was the valid one.
Puts his 2025 pay at a $10m salary and $27.5m in bonuses.
Why McLaren Tied Piastri Down to 2028
McLaren pays Piastri a relatively low base and rewards him through bonuses, and his record since 2023 explains why the team has extended his deal to 2028.
Junior titles in a row. He won Formula Renault Eurocup, F3 and F2 in consecutive years from 2019 to 2021, then won a Grand Prix in his second F1 season.
Results on a modest base. Nine wins and 28 podiums from 85 starts have come while earning less than half of Norris’s salary.
Pay tied to performance. His $27.5m bonus in 2025 was nearly three times his $10m base, so McLaren pays most when he delivers.
A driver McLaren fought for. The team won the 2022 contract dispute with Alpine to sign him and has extended his deal twice since, in 2023 and 2025.
Webber in his corner. Mark Webber manages him with Ann Neal, so a nine-time Grand Prix winner handles his negotiations with McLaren.
Piastri's Earnings Next to Lando Norris
Lando Norris earns $30m in base salary, $17m more than Piastri. Once both bonus scenarios are counted the gap widens to $29m, at $69.5m against $40.5m. Norris also leads the 2026 points 211 to 144, a big swing from last season when only 13 points separated them.
McLaren has Oscar Piastri under contract until the end of 2028, according to reports on the multi-year extension it announced on March 11, 2025. That deal added 2027 and 2028 to the contract he signed in September 2023, which covers him through this season. The team itself has never published the end date.
No release clause or buyout figure for Oscar Piastri has been made public, so there’s no known way out of his McLaren deal before 2028. He hasn’t shown any interest in leaving either. When Norris signed his new contract in August 2026, Piastri said he was “good for now” with his own.
Oscar Piastri’s current McLaren contract is worth $28m in base salary across 2024 to 2026, with his pay rising from $5m in the first year to $13m now. His extension adds 2027 and 2028 and would be worth around $26m more if the $13m carries over.
Bonuses come on top, and they reached $27.5m in 2025.
In 2026, Oscar Piastri is on a $13m base salary from McLaren, up from $10m last year. If his bonuses match the $27.5m he earned in 2025, his total for the season could reach $40.5m. Averaged across the year, his base comes to about $1.08m a month.
Oscar Piastri makes about $565k per race from his $13m McLaren base salary in 2026. If his bonuses match the $27.5m he earned in 2025, his per-race average rises to $1.76m.
McLaren’s real payments won’t follow these tidy averages, so treat them as a guide to scale.
Yes, Lando Norris earns far more than Oscar Piastri, with a $30m base salary against $13m in 2026. Including bonus scenarios, the gap is $69.5m to $40.5m. Norris is also signed to 2030 on a deal reported at up to £30m ($39.8m) a season, while Piastri’s contract runs to 2028.
