Is the Dutch Grand Prix Good for Racing?

More than the layout suggests. Zandvoort is narrow and passing is hard, yet F1 counted 70 overtakes in 2025. The two real chances come at Tarzan, the cambered Turn 1 hairpin, and the Hans Ernst chicane at Turns 11 and 12.

The animated pole lap is flat out for 52% of its length, brakes 11 times and peaks at 316km/h, among the season’s lowest top speeds. In the final race Lando Norris braked later and swept around the outside of Kimi Antonelli into Tarzan for second, then took the lead from Lewis Hamilton on the same lap.

What Decided Races at the Dutch Grand Prix

Neutralizations shaped the results. The Safety Car and the Virtual Safety Car each appeared in 60% of the five races before 2026, and a stop costs about 18.09s, the lowest published pit loss in F1. A cheap stop under yellow could swing a race.

The final race was just as busy. A crash at the end of lap 1 brought out the red flag and a free tire change, and two Virtual Safety Cars followed. Rain before the start left the track damp, and sand from the dunes shifts grip between sessions. There’s no Dutch race on the 2027 calendar.

Dutch Grand Prix Tire Strategy

The early red flag let every driver change tires. Most of the top 10 then stopped twice more, and Norris won by running softs from the restart, then two long stints on hards.

Late on, four of the top six took fresh softs with 16 or 17 laps left, and Charles Leclerc set the fastest lap on his. Fernando Alonso went the other way, one-stopping to ninth after the restart.

Pirelli brought the C2, C3 and C4. The banking loads the tires hard, but cool, damp coastal weather can take the edge off wear.

Circuit Zandvoort Sector by Sector and Corner by Corner

Speeds, gears and braking points below come from Lando Norris‘s 1:11.163 pole lap in qualifying for the final Dutch Grand Prix in 2026. He spent 52% of the lap at full throttle and 12.1 seconds on the brakes, and peaked at 316 km/h on the main straight. The slowest point was 93 km/h in the Hans Ernst chicane.

Sector 1
Turns 1-6 in 24.456 Seconds
The opening sector holds the top speed of the lap and its fastest corners. Norris was at full throttle for 55% of it and braked for 4.7 seconds, more than in either of the other sectors, most of it for Tarzan and the Turn 3 banking. Speeds ran from 316 km/h down to 113 km/h.
Turn 1
Tarzan
Norris braked from 289 km/h about 128m before the apex and was down to 113 km/h in third gear after 1.8 seconds on the brakes. Full throttle came back 79m after the apex. Brembo rates Tarzan the hardest stop at Zandvoort, at 4.7 g with 141 kg on the pedal.
Turns 2-3
Gerlachbocht and Hugenholtz Banking
Gerlachbocht is a lift, taken at 187 km/h in fifth gear. The banked Turn 3 needs 1.17 seconds of braking, from 238 km/h down to 134 km/h in third, and Norris was flat again 41m after the apex. Designer Jarno Zaffelli says "The engineering of the corner is mathematically developed based on a Fibonacci series."
Turns 4-6
Hunserug and Slotemaker
This is the flat-out run through the dunes. Norris took Hunserug at 245 km/h in sixth and was at 290 km/h and 297 km/h in eighth gear through Turns 5 and 6, with no lift at all. Brembo says drivers don't brake anywhere from Turn 4 to Turn 7.
Sector 2
Turns 7-10 in 24.898 Seconds
The longest sector by time has the least full throttle, 44% against 55% and 58% in the other two, because Scheivlak and Mastersbocht lead into two slow corners. Norris braked for 3.9 seconds here, and speeds ran from 292 km/h down to 117 km/h at Turn 9.
Turns 7-8
Scheivlak and Mastersbocht
Scheivlak is a partial lift, to 57% throttle at 256 km/h in seventh gear. Mastersbocht asks for much more, and Norris was down to 218 km/h in sixth with the throttle at just 11%.
Turns 9-10
The Slow Middle Corners
Turn 9 is a stop from 253 km/h to 117 km/h in third gear, with 1.29 seconds on the brakes. Turn 10, named after sponsor CM.com, follows from 194 km/h to 122 km/h, also in third, and Norris needed 2.36 seconds and 97m to get back to full throttle, the longest wait on the lap.
Sector 3
Turns 11-14 in 21.809 Seconds
The shortest sector has both the slowest corner on the lap and the run onto the main straight. Norris was at full throttle for 58% of it, the highest share of the three, and braked for 3.6 seconds, the least of any sector. Speeds ran from 310 km/h down to 93 km/h.
Turns 11-12
Hans Ernst Chicane
The chicane takes more braking than any other corner on the 2026 lap, 2.57 seconds, against 1.8 seconds at Tarzan. Norris braked from 237 km/h, went through Turn 11 at 117 km/h off the throttle and reached the lowest speed of the lap, 93 km/h in second gear, at Turn 12. He was flat again 64m after the apex.
Turns 13-14
Onto the Arie Luyendyk Banking
A short stop at Turn 13 takes Norris from 242 km/h to 180 km/h in fourth gear in 0.68 seconds. Full throttle came back 65m after the apex, and from there he stayed flat for 889m and 11.2 seconds, the longest run of the lap, through the final banking at 266 km/h in seventh and all the way to Tarzan.

History of Circuit Zandvoort

Zandvoort has raced in the dunes since 1948. Formula 1 visited between 1952 and 1985, came back in 2021 and left again after the 2026 race.

1948
The Circuit Opens
The Prijs van Zandvoort was the first race held at the circuit, run on August 7, 1948.
1952
Dutch Grand Prix Joins the Championship
The 1952 race was the first Dutch Grand Prix to count as a round of the World Championship.
1985-1989
Exit and a Shorter Track
Formula 1 left after the 1985 race, and money problems pushed the circuit onto a shorter interim club layout in 1989.
1999
The Grand Prix Circuit Returns
An extension restored parts of the old route and let Zandvoort host bigger international events again.
2020-2021
Banking for the Comeback
New banking and safety work prepared the track for Formula 1, and the return, postponed from 2020, came on September 5, 2021.
2026
A Sprint and a Farewell
The final scheduled Dutch Grand Prix brought the venue's first Sprint, won by George Russell, before Lando Norris won the main race.

How Much Does Circuit Zandvoort Cost?

Zandvoort's municipal council approved the equivalent of €360k ($410k) to build the circuit in 1947, and it opened the following year. We couldn't find a reliable figure for the 2019-2020 rebuild that added the banked Turns 3 and 14 for F1's return, or for the hosting fee the private promoter paid before the Dutch Grand Prix ended in 2026.

How Much Did Circuit Zandvoort Cost to Build?

Zandvoort's municipal council approved the equivalent of €360k ($410k) for building the track in the dunes on November 14, 1947. The big later project was the rebuild for F1's return, designed by Jarno Zaffelli's firm Dromo, which added banking at Turn 3 and the final corner and brought the circuit up to FIA standards. We couldn't find a reliable figure for its cost. In 2025 the circuit sold its naming rights to MASCOT Workwear for at least three years, and that sum wasn't disclosed either.

How Much Was the Dutch Grand Prix Hosting Fee?

It was never disclosed, and we couldn't find a reliable reported figure. The promoter, which calls itself "a privately owned and operated business", first signed in May 2019 for at least three years from 2020. Covid canceled the 2020 race, so the first was held in 2021, and the deal was extended to 2025 in December 2022. In December 2024 the two sides agreed a last one-year extension, and the promoter chose to stop after 2026, weighing "the opportunities presented by continuing to host the event, against other risks and responsibilities". The final race drew 325,000 people.

Circuit Zandvoort and Dutch Grand Prix Questions

Zandvoort’s Turn 3 is banked at 19° and the final corner at 18°. The Turn 3 banking lets drivers take more than one line and carry speed onto the next straight, while the final banking lets them carry more speed onto the main straight, which is why Turn 13’s exit matters so much.

Circuit Zandvoort sits among coastal dunes, and sand on the surface can change grip from one session to the next. Wind and rain off the coast add to it. A setup that felt right in practice can feel different by qualifying, so teams keep reading the track through the weekend.

No, the Dutch Grand Prix isn’t on the 2027 calendar. The August 21-23, 2026 race at Zandvoort was the final scheduled edition, and the circuit’s partnership with Formula 1 ended there. The final Dutch Grand Prix ticket prices are kept as a record of what that weekend cost.

Lewis Hamilton holds the Circuit Zandvoort race lap record with 1:11.097, set in 2021, the year Formula 1 returned. The quickest race lap of 2026 was Charles Leclerc’s 1:14.230, just over three seconds slower, and Lando Norris took pole that weekend with 1:11.163.

Zandvoort hosted one F1 Sprint, in 2026. George Russell won the 24-lap race in 30:25.318 and Lando Norris set the fastest lap with 1:14.881. Pirelli made the medium and soft the options that weekend and kept the hard as the reference for the Grand Prix.

The Dutch Grand Prix hosting fee was never disclosed, and we couldn’t find a reliable reported figure. The promoter, a privately owned business, held six races at Zandvoort from 2021 to 2026 and then chose to stop, saying it had weighed the opportunities of carrying on against other risks and responsibilities.

Zandvoort’s municipal council approved the equivalent of €360k ($410k) to build the circuit in November 1947, and the track opened in August 1948. We couldn’t find a reliable figure for the 2019-2020 rebuild that added banking at Turn 3 and the final corner for Formula 1’s return.
